1. Let’s
talk about education. What can you tell me about your school?
In Belarus there are 4 stages of
education: preschool education, primary school education, secondary school
education, and higher education.
Primary and secondary school education is
compulsory. All in all it last 11 years. Children come to school at the age of
6 or 7. School year begins on September 1st and ends at the end of May. It’s
divided into 4 terms. At the end of each term pupils have holidays. The basic
goal of school is to provide pupils with knowledge of particular subjects:
Russian and Belarusian Language and Literature, Maths, a foreign language,
Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History, Geography, IT, PE.
After
the 9th form pupils can either enter a college or lyceum or continue education
at school. To receive the Certificate of Secondary Education pupils have to
take 4 compulsory exams in Russian or Belarusian Language, Mathematics, History
of Belarus and Foreign Language. After graduation from secondary school pupils
usually take part in the Centralized Testing the results of which afford them
to enter a higher educational establishment or to get a profession at college.
I
study at school number 13. The school building itself is of a typical design
with classrooms, administrative offices, the canteen, 2 gyms and the library.
All
classrooms of our school are light and spacious. There are physics and
chemistry labs where we can make experiments. There are new computers in the
computer sciences room. Our pupils often win the city academic competitions.
My
favourite subject is …. because…
I
like my school very much. Our school provides children not only with knowledge.
It’s also a place where we spend our free time. There are many different
subject groups or circles and sport sections in my school. Special teachers help
children to develop their creative abilities either in sport sections, a school
choir or theatre, or to improve English after classes. Ecology and tourism are
also very popular today. So, schoolchildren can also be engaged in these
activities.
2. Have
you decided what you will do after leaving school?
Yes, I have. I made my choice last year. I want to be
a doctor. This is an interesting and noble profession. I want to help people
who face health problems. Doctors should be kind and attentive to people. It’s
one of the greatest professions in the world.
3. Ask
me about the school I went to when I was young.
1.
Was your school life interesting?
2.
What was your favourite subject at school?
3.
Who was your favourite teacher?
4.
Did you have a computer class when you were at school?
5.
Was your school big?
4. Give
me a piece of advice on how to make all pupils more attentive at the lesson.
I think you should give them good marks. You should
give your students individual tasks. Tell them interesting stories. You shouldn’t
give them a lot of hometask.
5. Some
people think that education is a key to success. Do you agree with it?
I
agree with it. I think education is a key to success. If you are an educated person you can get a
good job and you can become a good person. But education is not only schooling,
it’s a long-life process of learning different things, discovering and
inventing, understanding not only the world around us, but also our inner self.
