Many years ago, in 1666, London was completely destroyed by fire. The fire started in one of the shops on September 2nd. It wasn't taken seriously by many people at first. That summer was very hot and dry and there was not much water in the city.
Becides, a strong east wind was blowing and in a short time many houses were burnt down. When the morning of September 3rd came the fire was blown down to the River Thames. There were many stores of hay, coal and wood along the river and they all caught fire very quickly. On the third day many houses were pulled down.It was the king's order. But the fire went all over the city. It lasted four days. When it was stopped at last, many people were left without roof over their heads. The houses stood in ruins. Only some houses were not destroyed. The smell of smoke hung over the city for many weeks.
