-Let’s check up your hometask. Your hometask was to write about your favourite school tradition. Let’s speak about school traditions and define the most popular one.

Key to the task.

My favourite school tradition is the celebration of the Victory Day. It is on May, 9. It takes place annually. The event takes place in the assembly hall. Pupils, their parents, teachers and invited veterans take place in it.  They learn song and poems, learn to dance. Pupils prepare the concert programme while others enjoy the concert. This day we celebrate the Victory in the Second World War and the victory over fascism. We must remember our victory in order to prevent such kind of events in the future.

II.

-What famous schools do you know? Close your eyes and think of a British school. Write down the first five things you have thought of.

- We are going to read a text about Harrow school. Before reading it, make sure, you know the words

Winston Churchill –

- Read about Harrow, the school where Winston Churchill studied. What makes the school so popular? Ex.2a, p.58.SB.

- Find some words in the text.

- Answer the questions.

1. Who studies at Harrow?

2. Explain the phrase: “Harrow is a full-boarding school”.

3. What facilities does Harrow offer?

- Fill in the table. Choose the information.

- Work in groups now. You are going to read two more texts about British schools. Find information in the text and fill in the table.

- The first group is going to read about Eaton. What are the advantages of studying there? Ex.2b, p.58.SB.

- The second group is going to read about Badminton School.

- True or False

1. Life at Eton is very boring.

2. Students do a lot of sports at Eaton.

3. The main sports at Eaton are cricket and rugby.

4. In free time students have a rest and play computer games.

5. The teachers create a unique atmosphere of excellence and independence.

Key to the task.

1.     False

2.     True

3.     False

4.     False

5.     True

- How is Badminton School different from the other two?

-Translate the word combinations.

Key to the task.

A boarding school for girls aged 4-18; excellent facilities; a friendly atmosphere; a reference book; to search for the information on the Internet; to develop talents, skills and abilities.

-Look through the three texts again and read out the sentences that prove the high standards of education at these schools.

- How are these schools different? What do they have in common? What do students do after school at these schools?

Key to the task.

These boarding schools are single-sex schools, all of them are aimed at developing skills and talents of their pupils.

Harrow and Eton are schools for boys, and Badminton is a school for girls.

 - Let’s divide into three groups: Harrow, Eaton and Badminton School. I’ll say sentences about schools, when you hear a sentences about your school, you will stand up. For example: This school offers excellent facilities. They have a lot of opportunities to travel to foreign countries.

-Work in groups. Ask your groupmates which school they like the most and why.

Key to the task.

Which of these schools do you like most? Why? – I like the Harrow / Eton / Badminton School because this offers brilliant facilities / this school develops qualities of leadership and independence / because students have opportunities to travel to foreign countries.
