Australia
Australia is the biggest island in the world and the smallest continent.
There are some
mountains along the east and the west coasts, but the centre of the country is
very flat.
The landscape
isn’t boring. The deserts are beautiful – red, orange and brown. There are
great salt lakes, strange rocks, interesting plants and animals in Australia. The
most famous rock is Ayers Rock. It’s 335 metres high in central Australia.
Native Australians call it Uluru and believe it is holy.
The population
is about 24 million people.
In 1770 Captain
James Cook discovered Australia.
On the flag of
Australia there is the Southern Cross – a group of stars that you can see only
above Australia.
