When Arthur Conan Doyle published his first story about Sherlock Holmes, he didn't expected it to become an immediate success. For many years, the author tried to concentrate on historical novels, whom he considered to be more valuable then detective stories. One day, while traveling by the train, Doyle met an old lady who claimed she knew Holmes personally. She described him as a tall, thin man with a sharp nose and deep knowledge in chemistry. The writer was so surprising by her confidence that he didn't dare to tell her the truth. Instead, he simply smiled and wished her a grate day, realizing that his character had already began to live his own life.

1. expected → expect (после вспомогательного глагола didn't используется инфинитив без to).
