Belarusian life is full of customs and traditions.
Some holidays and traditions are religious. They are Christmas and Easter. Christmas is celebrated on January 7. Easter is celebrated in spring.
We celebrate “Kalyady” in
January. During “Kalyady” groups of happy young and old people, wearing masks
and smart clothes, go from house to house and sing carols. Hosts usually give
them money and delicious food.
In June Belarusian people have
“Kupalle”, the Midsummer Day, connected with old legends and customs. People
light bonfires, dance and sing songs.
Another religious holiday is
“Dziady” when people gather around one big table to remember their dead
relatives.
We also celebrate many state
holidays: Victory Day (on the 9th of May), Women’s Day (on the 8th
of March), and Independence Day (on the 3rd of July).
The most popular holiday in
Belarus is New Year’s Day. This is also my favourite holiday. We put and
decorate a beautiful New Year tree. We have a party dinner at night. We watch
TV, dance, eat food and have a lot of fun. I enjoy this holiday very much.
